In 1998, Indonesia experienced severe human rights abuses
during mass economic and political uprisings that ended
President Suharto's 32-year authoritarian rule.
These violations included the May 1998 riots
involving mass sexual violence against ethnic Chinese women,
the kidnapping and disappearance of pro-democracy activists
by military special forces,
and the fatal shooting of student protesters.

Widespread riots in Jakarta, Medan, and Surakarta targeted the ethnic Chinese minority,
resulting in over 1,000 deaths (mostly looters trapped in fires)
and scores of documented cases of mass rape.
